Montauk is rightly considered the fishing capital of New York, and perhaps even the east end! In addition to having a thriving sport-fishing business, Montauk is the home of New York State’s largest shipping/packing dock for fresh seafood, much of which ends up at what used to be Fulton Market in New York City (now Hunts Point in the Bronx).
Here is a list of some of the seafood you’ll find in Montauk.
- Porgy (Scup)
- Scallops
- Lobster
- Jumbo Lobster
- Monkfish
- Calamari (Squid)
- Tuna
- Oysters
- Mako Shark
- Bluefish
- Flounder
- Fluke
- Swordfish
- Steamers
- Striped Bass
- Mussels
- Clams
- Whiting
- Sea Bass (Black Bass)
- Cod
- Blue Claw Crab
And always remember, no matter what anyone tells you, shrimp and salmon are never local!
