In order to find the walking dunes travel west from town on highway 27 and take the first right after Cyril’s. Cross the rail road tracks and follow the road to its end. I walked through here on a breezy but hot August afternoon and would recommend the trail to everyone visiting Montauk. At one point on the trail all the noise of cars and visible buildings disappears and you’re left with the serenity of water, nature and of course, sand! Be sure to read the signage as to why they call then the “walking” dunes.

If you’re going to drive all the way out there, make sure you visit the museum and climb to the top of the lighthouse. However, my favorite way to see the lighthouse is by boat. You can rent a small motor boat at Uhlein’s on Westlake Drive, make your way ever so slowly out of the Inlet, (then make a right!) and cruise past families having fun in the sun on gin beach, shagwong point, where you’ll find a sand bar (don’t hit bottom!) that is shallow enough to stand and is perfect for a cool dip! Continue on toward the lighthouse and as you come around the bend you truly feel the majesty of this historic landmark. Look around you and you’ll see a multitude of sport fishermen hoping for their prize and big commercial draggers teetering their way back home with a full load ready to send to market.
